The Stage Calls

Where it’s all about artistic passion.

Gamarjobat

After their last two sell out shows in Malaysia, the comedy duo of Gamarjobat are back in KL again with a brand new show, Gamarjobat’s Western.

Since their first visit to Kuala Lumpur, Gamarjobat became one of Gardner & Wife’s most requested shows. Winning several new awards, including Best International Act 2006 at the Brighton Fringe Festival, Gamarjobat returned to Malaysia directly from another successful season at the World Buskers Festival in New Zealand. Ketch & Hiro-pon played to capacity audiences for their entire two-week run at The Actors Studio @ Bangsar Shopping Centre.

Gardner & Wife’s first show from Asia, Gamarjobat, created tremendous word-of-mouth excitement, playing to frequent standing ovations for over two-and-a-half weeks at The Actors Studio @ Bangsar Shopping Centre and proving why this “shut up comedy” won top comedy awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival two years running – Best Dubble Act 2004 and the Tap Water Award 2005. Sponsors included Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur.

This hilarious “shut up comedy” from Japan stars a highly-acclaimed physical comedy duo who will perform a silent comedy that absolutely transcends anything you think you know about clowning, magic and mime!

The Urbanscapes festival returns, working again with the aim to bring together all the different artistic scenes around the city, under a single banner.

This year’s edition will feature a collection of live acts, visual and performance art, installations, film/video screenings, theatre performances and a marketplace.

Urbanscapes 2008 is also going “user-generated,” in the sense that the organisers are working together with “users” such as the general public, partners, collectives and individuals - each of them expressing themselves uniquely and contributing to the festival as a whole.

The public can participate by logging on to the festival website at www.urbanscapes.com.my to cast their votes for acts that they would like to see in special “Voters’ Choice” slots.

There will be seven main festival areas, four of which are live performance stages, namely the XPax Lawn Stage, the XPax Box, the Acoustic Livehouse and The Lakeside. The other three main areas are the Cinetheatre, Gallery and Marketplace.

Sybil

sybilSet in Perak, Malaya in December 1941, Sybil Kathigasu, her husband Dr. A.C. Kathigasu, and the Captain (her Resistance contact) listen one evening to devastating news of the British defeat throughout the peninsula.

Suspicion is rife, Japanese collaborators are present in every town, and the feared Kempetai - the Japanese Military Police that is answerable only to itself - is beginning to take an interest in the small town.

Sybil, however, refuses the Captain’s advice to flee to the jungle, and instead redoubles her efforts to thwart the Japanese. Before long, Dr Kathigasu is arrested on suspicion of aiding the resistance, and Sybil’s arrest follows soon after.

She is subjected to torture and interrogation at the hands of Sgt. Yoshimura, the head of the district Kempetai, who is convinced Sybil is a Resistance spy.

Starring Sukania Venugopal, Doppo Narita, Darius Taraporvala, Ashraf Zain and Wong Wai Hoong and directed by Dato’ Faridah Merican.

Written by U-En Ng, based on the book “No Dram of Mercy” by Sybil Kathigasu.
